Furnace Replacement Cost Calculator
Add documented allowances, calculate the range, and see which work still needs a price.
Installed planning range
Ready to calculate
National allowances are filled in. Calculate now or edit them to match your written scope.
Scope, itemized amounts and limits
Each low, typical and high total adds that column once. Endpoints are allowance sums, not statistical confidence limits. The guide high is not a price ceiling.
Tax, financing, incentives and unknown work are excluded.
Formula v2.1. Sources checked October 14, 2026; oil-high revised October 15, 2026. Method and corrections.
Paper method and limits
Add each low column once, then each typical column and each high column. An installed bundle already includes equipment and labor. Add only separately priced extras. Cooling already included adds no second amount. Keep unknown work outside the subtotal. Guide endpoints are not guaranteed prices.
National planning allowances and source limits
US dollars, checked October 14, 2026. These defaults include equipment and installation once. The typical column is a calculated allowance, not a measured national median. Each value is editable in the tool.
| Scenario | Low | Typical allowance | High guide endpoint | Efficiency and scope |

| Oil, high efficiency | $6,000 | $8,375 | $10,000 | High-efficiency oil; full model needed. Equipment and installation included once. Today's Homeowner supplies the high-efficiency band; Angi and Carrier supply broad oil installed ranges, not exact-tier prices. Carrier marks $10,000+ as open-ended. Tank, chimney, permits and other unconfirmed site work stay unpriced. Sources: Today's Homeowner oil furnace guide; Angi national furnace cost guide; Carrier furnace cost guide |
Low and high span the cited guide ranges. Typical is the median of the range midpoints, rounded to a whole dollar. It is a planning amount, not a measured project median. Gas tiers keep broad fuel ranges alongside a named narrower band.
Related Angi, HomeAdvisor and Carrier records are not claimed to be independent surveys. This is not one controlled set of equal-scope jobs. Unknown capacity stays unknown. No size, weather or location price multiplier is used.

Oil, high efficiency: installed source ranges
Rechecked October 15, 2026. Low is the lowest included endpoint; high is the highest published endpoint. Typical is the rounded median of the three midpoints: $7,587.50, $8,375 and $8,375. The result is $6,000 / $8,375 / $10,000, with no price ceiling implied.
- Today's Homeowner oil furnace guide: $6,000 to $9,175. High-efficiency oil, installed.
- Angi national furnace cost guide: $6,750 to $10,000. Broad oil, installed; not efficiency-specific.
- Carrier furnace cost guide: $6,750 to $10,000. Broad oil, installed; upper endpoint open-ended, not efficiency-specific.
HomeGuide's $3,000 to $10,000 high-efficiency table excludes installation. It contributes no endpoint or midpoint to this installed allowance.
Published scopes differ. A broad fuel range does not prove an exact efficiency-tier price. Upper endpoints marked “+” in a source are open-ended. Taxes, incentives, financing and unresolved site work are outside the subtotal. Read the method and correction history.
Use this furnace replacement cost calculator to plan an installed budget before written bids arrive. National low, typical and high allowances are filled in for gas and propane. Oil and electric resistance heat are covered too. Choose a scenario and calculate. Edit the prices when you have better evidence for the actual job.
The default counts one furnace-and-install bundle. Add a separate central AC scope, or state that cooling is already in the bundle. Typical is a derived planning amount, not a measured project median. Ducts, vents, supply work and permits stay unknown until priced or confirmed included. The result shows a priced subtotal with those open items beside it.
Furnace replacement cost calculator: read the national defaults
The source table names each guide, its scope and the date checked. Low and high retain the published planning envelope. Typical is the median of source-range midpoints. Related sources are not claimed to be independent surveys. Broad fuel ranges do not prove a precise price for each efficiency tier.
These are US planning amounts, not local bids. An open-ended guide high is not a price ceiling. The tool adds no house-area price curve, blanket package discount or guessed local fee. Read the methodology for the source limits.
Project, fuel and capacity
Choose replacement for an existing source or new installation for adding this system. That setting records intent. It does not add a fixed surcharge. New ducts or service work need their own priced scope.
| Fuel | Work to resolve beyond the base scope |
|---|---|
| Natural gas | Fuel supply, vents and duct changes |
| Propane | Tank, supply terms and approved fuel setup |
| Oil | Tank, chimney and retirement duties |
| Resistance electric | Panel, circuits and service work |
Leave capacity and efficiency blank when unknown. Entered capacity needs its unit: fuel input, heat output or electric heating power. A family AFUE maximum is not every full model's rating. AFUE also does not include duct losses.
ACCA Manual J covers the house load. The old cabinet label is not that record. Use the furnace size worksheet to turn a known load into furnace sizes. It does not select a purchase size.
Installed bundle or separate prices
The default bundle includes unit and fitting work once. Do not add another full labor allowance to it. Switch to separate prices only when your actual scope supplies that split. This clears the bundle prices so they cannot be reused as bare-equipment amounts.
| Layout | Count once |
|---|---|
| Installed furnace | Bundle plus separate extras |
| Separate unit and fitting | Both written lines plus separate extras |
| Combined furnace/AC | Whole bundle, with cooling marked included |
| Furnace plus separate AC | Each non-overlapping installed scope |
For a fixed amount, use the same value in all three columns. For a range, typical must sit between low and high. Empty prices do not become zero. A reversed range keeps your entries and focuses the field to correct.
Combined furnace and AC scope
The cooling option adds a sourced central AC allowance with its own install work. If cooling is already in your base bundle, mark that state. The tool then adds no second cooling amount.
Keep the indoor coil, blower and outdoor match with the bid. Shared work can change a real package price. But no standard discount is invented here. Use whole HVAC costs or AC replacement costs for those limits.
Unknown site work
Mark each site-work item as unknown, included or extra. Unknown stays outside the subtotal and remains listed. Included means written scope covers it or a project answer says it is not required. Extra needs its own stated amount, added once.
Keep every site-work line visible. Review supply and removal scope. Check access and permits too. A blank permit amount is not proof of no fee.
A new cabinet does not prove the old venting or service connection is accepted. DOE direct-vent guidance gives context. This site supplies no fuel or electrical work steps.
Furnace replacement cost calculator method
Low total adds low amounts. Typical adds typical amounts. High adds high amounts. Whole-dollar results keep the entered scope and unknown list. A broad range is not a guaranteed quote or a statistical confidence interval.
Changing an input makes the result stale. Recalculate before using it. Reset restores defaults. Print retains the current inputs, source basis and result.
Without JavaScript, use the visible allowances and add each column on paper. No account or form submission is needed.
FAQ
Can I estimate before receiving bids?
Yes. The national prices are filled in for a base planning result. Keep unpriced work beside it. Replace the allowances with actual equal-scope amounts when bids arrive. More precise typed numbers do not make an incomplete scope a full project quote.
Why do gas tiers share endpoints?
The evidence mixes broad fuel ranges with narrower efficiency bands. It does not isolate each feature at the same house. The tool preserves the broad envelope instead of inventing exact tier prices. Each scenario identifies its sources.
Does the estimate include future energy savings?
No. It prices the current installed scope. Running cost needs heat demand, performance and rates for a stated period. Future rebates, tax credits or bill savings are not deducted. Keep that separate calculation and its limits with the project.
Verdict: resolve the scope after the first estimate
The furnace replacement cost calculator gives a sourced national planning range even before you enter your own prices. Use the unknown list to decide what to price next. Compare furnace models, gas scope or heat-pump costs before choosing between written bids.
